In this session we will present two data collection activities, that you can do with your students, and that result in writing an equation of a line from the data collected. We will then discuss what information the equation tells us, including what the slope of the line tells us. (It’s not just “Rise over Run”!) Bring a graphing calculator, or another graphing utility, but graphing calculator experience is not necessary for this workshop.
Presenter: Bruce MacMillan a retired mathematics teacher who has taught high school for 30 years, taught at the University of Colorado at Denver for 7 years, and taught at the University of Arizona for 13 years. He has presented at both local conferences (MEAD for 15 years) and national conferences. As a consultant for Texas Instruments, teaching the proper use of graphing calculator in the high school curriculum from first year Algebra through Advanced Placement Calculus, he has written and taught workshops in all parts of the country.
