Lost Einsteins and Katherines

January 14, 2021

Innovation is a key source of economic growth. Research conducted by Dr. Lisa Cook of Michigan State University suggests that patent laws and strong science education programs are insufficient to maximize the generation and commercialization of new ideas. Her analysis of historical data, particularly patent applications from 1870-1940, indicates that racial violence and lack of equal protection under the law impede innovation, and thus, economic development. Dr. Cook’s presentation will provide history and economics educators with valuable insights to incorporate in classroom instruction.
