In this workshop, Dr. Rose Hattab will provide cultural background about Arabic cultures in the Middle East and how that affects students’ and families’ interactions with American school systems. This will include Middle Eastern concepts of time and respect, gender interactions, and differences in expectations about schools. She will also provide information to help teachers accommodate their students’ learning during the upcoming month of Ramadan and will be happy to answer questions.
Dr. Hattab was born in Iraq and came to the US as a child. She attended public schools in Tucson, Arizona, and saw her parents learning to work with the local school district through her and her siblings’ education. Dr. Hattab has also experienced the other side of the system as a teacher at Cholla High School, so she is well-situated to help other teachers support the students and families.
