Migrant Waves in the Making of America

We are funded by National Endowment for the Humanities for a two-week professional opportunity for K-12 educators from all over the country. It will be held in person in Tucson, AZ, July 9 – July 21, 2023, and is hosted by the University of Arizona and Worlds of Worlds Center of Global Literacies and Literatures (wowlit.org). We will explore migration as a constant in U.S. history by immersing ourselves in the stories often left out of traditional narratives of U.S. history. Participants will engage with children’s, young adult, and adult literature, historical records, artifacts, museums, and film to explore the stories, histories, and contributions of underrepresented groups in U.S. history.
Participants will also interact with visiting scholars and children’s and young adult authors to learn from their processes of research. We will study Arizona to understand the influence of continuous waves of migrants on the making of America. By engaging in humanities research within this case study and then applying these strategies to their own states, participants will gain knowledge and experiences to support curricular planning for their own educational contexts.
