Zines as ____: The Expansive Nature of Teaching with Zines

April 8, 2023

Bring your curiosity and your questions to a generative professional development workshop, led by Amanda Meeks of Outspokin’ and Bookish, for educators working with students of any age. Zines are an accessible medium with the potential to enhance students’ learning experiences in a multitude of ways. We will use prompts to provoke new and unusual ideas for using zines as a teaching tool, creative expression, as collaboration, for self-discovery or reflection, and so much more. Participants will have an opportunity to create a zine in response to the group discussion and prompts.

The workshop will be held in-person on April 8 from 10 am until 12 pm at the University of Arizona Poetry Center. It is capped at twenty participants. Register here: https://forms.gle/n1gSKt2zvAUvwAMU8

Amanda Meeks is an interdisciplinary artist, librarian, and educator, whose creative practice includes zines and book art, Risograph printing, and engaging the community around DIY publishing through workshops and zine bike library pop-ups. Their zine bike project, Outspokin’ & Bookish, is part pop-up feminist zine/art object collection and part playful, mobile maker space focused on print media. By sharing DIY publishing and print media-making practices and tools via bicycle, they hope to inspire others to share their stories, ideas, and artwork.
