9 am – 4 pm at Worlds of Words, at the University of Arizona in Tucson, Arizona

This interactive workshop explores children’s literature focusing on refugee and immigrant experiences, with the goal of encouraging children to critically engage with story as a means of making sense of their own lives, and of understanding the lives of children whose experiences differ from their own.

Led by University of Arizona Regents Professor Kathy G. Short, Dr. Dorea Kleker, and Narges Zandi, along with refugee specialist Julie Kasper, the workshop features award-winning authors Shifa Saltagi Safadi (Kareem Between, 2025 National Book Award for Young People winner) and Kao Kalia Yang (The Rock in My Throat).

A small number of scholarships are available for educators who are located in the USA or Mexico, more than 40 miles from Tucson. These awards contribute to the costs of travel (up to $400 in reimbursements) for full-time K12 teachers/graduate students who participate in the entire four days of the institute.

Institute Highlights:

  • Examine themes of displacement, belonging, home, and identity
  • Engage with new picture books and novels
  • Meet children’s authors/illustrators
  • Receive books, materials, and PD Certificate
  • Cost: $100 for the four days (includes lunch and materials)
  • Limited travel funding available for eligible K-12 educators and graduate students
    • Apply by April 14, 2025
