Equitable Grading Community of Practice 2023-2024
This Community of Practice will challenge traditional approaches to assessment and strategize to use equitable grading in a traditional grading setting. Participants will explore equity issues related to grading and how to overcome them in your classroom and/or school.
Do your students’ grades accurately reflect their mastery of the standards? Do you ever feel like you’re spinning your wheels trying to juggle hundreds of assignments, checking homework, assigning extra credit, and not seeing positive results in your work? You might need “Grading for Equity”.
Key Concepts of Equitable Grading:
· Practices that lift the veil on how to succeed
· Practices that value knowledge, not environment or behavior
· Practices that support hope and a growth mindset
· Practices that build “soft skills” and motivate students without grading them
· Practices that are accurate and mathematically sound
This CoP is free to attend thanks to a generous grant from the Helios Education Foundation. Each participant will receive the book Grading for Equity by Joe Feldman.

TREC Community of Practice (CoP) Definition:
Through the different CoPs TREC offers, educators will build community while deepening their knowledge, understanding, and expertise to better support their passion for the teaching profession and student success (adapted from Wenger, McDermott, and Synder, 2002).

Jaime Camero is a sixth-grade science teacher at Douglas Elementary in the Flowing Wells Unified School District. She holds a master’s degree in Curriculum and Design and is a National Board Certified Teacher. She has been teaching for 21 years.
