HEMS HS: Quadratic Storytelling: Thinking Inside the Square

September 20, 2025

In this session, we will introduce Tanton’s Quadrus Method for solving Quadratic Equations, and how it can be used to solve any quadratic equation. We will solve Levels 1 – 6 of quadratic equations, derive the quadratic formula, discuss how the Quadrus method compares to factoring, and if time, show how it can be used to graph as well. Participants unfamiliar with this method will be mathematically challenged and intrigued. Interwoven throughout the session will be the discussion of the 14 Building Thinking Classrooms Strategies, and how they will maximize the quadratic thinking that the Quadrus Method reveals. The session will also be presented BTC style – VNPS, random groups of 3, small group discussion, whole group discussion, and driven not only by the presenters’ ideas, but also by the ideas of the participants. We hope that participants leave having their mathematical curiosity satisfied and feeling inspired to cultivate student thinking around the beautiful story of Quadratics.

Location: Hybrid: In-person at UArizona Tucson Campus. Remote via Zoom.
