Listen for the Learning:  What Productive Science Talk Sounds Like

In three-dimensional science classrooms, talk should do more than help teachers check for the “right” answer. This session will explore the shift away from the traditional IRE pattern—teacher initiation, student response, teacher evaluation—and toward productive talk that helps students clarify their thinking, reason with evidence, listen to one another, and build on each other’s ideas.

Administrators will watch a classroom video from an OpenSciEd classroom and analyze the accompanying transcript to identify the teacher moves and student interactions that make thinking visible and move collective sensemaking forward. Participants will leave with a clearer picture of what productive science discourse sounds like—and what to listen for during classroom walkthroughs.
