TREC and the Center for Recruitment and Retention of Mathematics Teachers (CRR) have partnered together for this four-part Math for Early Learners Series! This series can be attended as individual sessions, but the greatest understandings and connections will be made by attending as many sessions as possible.
Numbers & Cardinality, Measurement, Geometry, Algebraic Thinking, and Data Analysis
- January 18 4:30- 6:00 pm Numbers & Cardinality and measurement
- February 1 4:30- 6:00 pm Geometry
- February 15 4:30- 6:00 pm Algebraic Thinking
- March 7 5:00-6:30 pm Data Analysis and measurement
Early childhood is rich with experiences and explorations into mathematics. Looking at the world of a young child helps us find beautifully relevant ways to learn counting, cardinality, measurement, geometry, data analysis, and algebraic thinking. Come and explore these topics in our series.
Session 1: During Session 1 we will explore counting and cardinality through a picture walk of our environment. We will use number tracks to connect our counting to numerals, and we will discuss the rich concepts involved in these counting encounters.
Session 2: During Session 2 we will explore geometry the way a young child learns shape and space. We will look at the geometry of their world in and out of school.
Session 3: During Session 3 we will explore the ways we can engage young learners in algebraic thinking. We will discuss ideas that promote flexible thinking, structure, and repeated reasoning.
Session 4: During Session 4 will experience ways to help young learners quantify their world through data analysis and measurement. We will explore variability and clusters, encouraging question asking and answering.
Participants are encouraged to attend all four sessions but are welcome to join as they are able.
The sessions will be led by CRR’s Melissa Hosten.
