Technical Reading Performance Literacy

Course Description:
What do you guess is the number 1 desirable skill that the Arizona workforce is looking for in a new employee? Communication skills! This 2-day class will teach you strategies to use with your students that integrate reading, writing, and speaking opportunities into your program.

Day-one focuses on literacy and closely examines the Career and College Readiness Standards (CCRS) Reading Standards. You will determine where they are relevant in your curriculum, examine vocabulary strategies, learn about fluency and Lexile scores, and participate in a close reading lesson. Day-two focuses on CCRS Writing and Speaking Standards to determine what 11th and 12th-grade students have to do utilizing writing and speaking that will make them more employable and career-ready. Also, you will discover how CTSOs can support this and where in your curriculum you can embed writing and speaking in order to give your students more practice in those skills.

Objectives:
-Identify where Career and College Readiness standards are relevant in their curriculum
-Explain two strategies for improving reading fluency
-Determine how using Lexile scores will help students become stronger readers
-Evaluate the benefits of close reading and create a close reading lesson
-Write objectives for a lesson plan that implement CCRS writing and speaking standards

This is a two-day event starting first-day is on 11/13/2020 and the second day is on 11/20/2020

The completion of both Technical Reading and Performance Literacy will earn participant 1 credit hour (SH)
