Thinking Together: Building the Habits of Mathematical Collaboration (HEMS)

November 14, 2026

Educators from CRR partnership schools and districts receive $25 stipends for their participation in this HEMS workshop; other educators may still attend for free!

*Participants are warmly welcome to arrive 15 minutes early for this IN-PERSON ONLY workshop and enjoy refreshments while mingling!

[Grades 3-8] IN-PERSON ONLY. Thinking Together: Building the Habits of Mathematical Collaboration through the Standard for Mathematical Practices (HEMS)

What does it mean for students to truly collaborate mathematically, rather than simply take turns talking or divide up the work? In this hands-on workshop, participants will experience a progression of rich mathematical tasks designed around three habits of mathematical thinking: looking for structure, reasoning about quantities and relationships, and noticing repeated reasoning. Using the Standards for Mathematical Practice, participants will explore temporary roles and sentence stems that make productive mathematical contributions visible and give every learner meaningful ways to contribute to the group’s thinking.

Location: IN-PERSON ONLY in Tucson, Arizona.

Thank you to Lee and Arthur Herbst and the Herbst Family Foundation for their support of this HEMS workshop.
