Info Session: TREC Communities of Practice, Online

September 7, 2021

Join TREC Teacher Leaders for this info session, as they outline and explain the various opportunities for educators to join a TREC-led Community of Practice (CoP) for the 2021-2022 school year. These CoPs will reach across districts, bringing together educators (birth – 12th grade) to expand their professional learning by building upon their knowledge and expertise. Educators who attend the CoP Info Session will be given priority when registering to join a CoP.

Here’s an overview of this year’s Communities of Practice:

Onward Book Study:This Community of Practice is focused on educator emotional resiliency and uses the book Onward, by Elena Aguilar. You read a chapter each month and participate in a virtual or in-person monthly meeting during which the chapter is discussed and you engage in emotional resilience activities.

Specific Book Study CoPs:
Leading While Female:
Description: We will use our text, Leading While Female, A Culturally Proficient Response for Gender Equity to discuss issues around gender equity and leadership, and reflect on our practices and aspirations as educators. Similar to the authors of Leading While Female, as a group we will examine the gender equity gap—“a gap that currently denies highly qualified women and women of color opportunities to better serve our millions of public school students.” As the authors state, this book is written for those who want to join in “intentionally remaking a system that long ago put men in charge of women, not by happenstance, but by design.” This group will provide a “space to be brave”: to help educators feel empowered and better equipped to build up and support one another as leaders in and beyond the classroom. This group is open to anyone who is interested in promoting gender equity for educators in both formal and informal leadership roles.

The Trauma-Informed Educator:
Description: In this community of practice, we will use the book Help for Billy to explore trauma awareness in the classroom setting and how to incorporate strategies to address challenging behaviors.

Visual Art CoP
Description: This Community of Practice will be a hybrid format of an asynchronous resource sharing and collaboration component combined with synchronous meetings to create community and increase access to the region’s art community and resources unique to the Tucson area.

TREC Teams

TREC Teams are CoPs for teachers who have been in the field 3+ years. These teams will be led by a TREC Teacher Leader some with a specific focus on a variety of themes/topics (i.e., equitable grading) and others will be open supporting the group to identify a topic(s) that they are interested in exploring. Each TREC Teams CoP will work together to set goals and priorities for their year, including a specific outcome related to the theme/topic. A focus on Street Data (Safir & Dugan, 2021), will be included, and an inquiry lens adopted to focus on equity and teaching. Educators who engage in an inquiry project will receive a small stipend.

Come to this information session to learn more about each of these CoPs! This info session will be held on zoom and will be recorded.
